So much hating of cars lately. I am here to defend them the best I can. I will not win every argument, but I have to fight for all car cultures and end the automotive hate on OPPO. Because as a smart automotive community, we know there is always an exception to childish automotive stereotypes. Come at me or join me. End car hate!!!!

I certainly know how to drive a stick and do quite well.
I just have no reason to seek one out as my daily driver. If the Montego had been a stick I still would have bought it, but the auto wasn't a negative to me.

Targeted towards Honda is the kind of thing i'm after on this post. I've worked on EG's, EK's, and CR-V's that have gone forever with their auto trans without an issue. at the same time, my sister's 2010 TL's trans recently needed a valve body. The hate on all Honda trans is just unnecessary

The transmission is "reliable" in that it can certainly take the abuse of bad maintenance nightmares for a long time up until it finally fails, but it's also horrible in that it requires specific, non-standard care as well as just being awful for fuel economy up until Honda finally learned how to make a transmission, which by now is superseded by the CVT transmission anyway. The engine is actually pretty good. The chassis, suspension, etc are all not bad.
No matter what I do to my vehicle - even replacing the ECU - the transmission will always hold its efficiency back. Also, getting my hands on Honda fluid is expensive and sucks something terrible. I'm sure it'll run a lot better with the Honda fluid, but still...I shouldn't have to get the one specific thing in order for my car to work just normally.
This steals from what is by all means a perfectly fantastic and fun little car. After working on the engine I've begun to respect Honda a whole lot more, which is actually only more frustrating because it makes me wonder why they did all they did.
This isn't general bashing, this is a very specific problem, sort of like the problems I have with the ECU. Out of all of the manufacturer's for this range of years, Honda had to be the one that couldn't be tweaked in any capacity. Boo! That the transmission is durable is great and all, but why not engineer something that's made so that it doesn't demand dealer-only service and why just ignore mileage like that?
Honda's automatics are great now. I get that they had to learn how to make a really good one, but argh.
Then again, I'm not fond of most late '90s cars to begin with. All of the most known manufacturers had some kind of ridiculous flaw thanks to the overconfidence they had in the economy, leading up to what eventually happened to the entire market. Except, maybe, GM with Saturn and Mitsubishi.

was surprisingly natural for me.
I have a habit of driving with my right hand because automatics. So the left arm was on the window or the arm rest all the time not doing anything.
Was really natural to just use my left hand to shift and keep my right hand where i'm used to it being.
I got to drive a RHD Ford Figo at a ride and drive event at one of Ford's test tracks, we drove 10 cars, from Explorer to Figo, and not all Fords, competitors too. So I drove LHD stick, and then 5 minutes later was doing RHD, did better in the RHD.

It is all batch as well buddy. We just put a transmission on a 300k+ Volvo S90 a couple days ago. The owner never really did much to it. My e34 that went 416k also had that same Aisin auto 4spd. BUT, I've seen many that have failed as well. It is almost simplified to a "luck of the draw" stage.
Those dealer specific ATF's (that I sell everyday for4 high end brands) contain the same minimum amounts of wear additives and cleaning detergents among its hydraulic ability as store brand sythetic ATF. It will work in all he cars in my shop. Not all people want to spend $25.68 on Aston Martin ATF which is the same and equally expensive as my $23.83 Volvo ATF (per liter jugs).
Some people like to put brand fluid though. Gives them that "a clean car is faster" feel and do not buy anything else.As for those tweaks, it happens all the time with all brands. That is why there are so many VIN breaks especially on modules and ECU's. They make improvements and adjustments, it's normal. Most dealer only service is key to ensuring an expensive part and adhering to manufactures warranty. That is why we don't sell transmissions to other shops and over the counter anymore because they mess up on instillation and want to claim warranty. Especially with world standard ATV that has to be filled and drained at specific temperatures only accessed though the TCM (read only by dealer scan tools) and for good reason. Not saying Juan's auto shop isn't good, but a trans on a E63 is a tad bit more than R&R.
Toyota's manufacturing mindset is Kaizen (constant improvement). In a perfect world there wouldn't be errors. Even in the times where Porsche and Lexus were supposedly #1 and #2 in quality, there were many issues.
For example, 2011 XC60. Is it a good car? Sure. the 3.2 I-6 has less fidgety maintenance than Volvo's older motors and less common interior bit issues....
..... but, FUCK last week we had 5 come in with failed compressors. Also last year, we had one come in that had moister stains on the headliner. Turns out Volvo forgot to put the sunroof drain tubes on the sunroof tray and it leaked into the car.
Now a quick experiment.....how do you determine that info? I did not mention that those compressor replacement cars were fairly high mileage. Also on the sunroof story, i did not say that in fact it was such an isolated issue that has never happened ever again.
Are they shitty cars no. Some are high mileage with not issues and some with. Not going to ever say ALL of any car or part is bad.

If you posted something like "Just picked up my new corolla" I would not jump in and call you a dummy for buying it, I would probably even go as far to say "Congrats on your new car!" Getting a new car is fun and exciting even if you're not a gear head. However, if you posted "What does everyone think about the new corolla I would say that it's the worst car that I have ever had the displeasure of driving (because it is).
I agree that personal attacks are mean and unnecessary, but attacks on specific cars? That is totally fair game. If you get upset about what someone else thinks about your car, then you're insecure in your own drivers seat!
Often times it's the dumbest people that are the most offensive, so that should make it even easier to brush them off.

If someone made a post using your example or the Corolla and opinions, I wouldn't state my personal experience or preach to the world about it. Still, it isn't something I want to preach to get eliminated because we all have our opinion. It's the direct and pure hate man, there is not need for it. On the fluid, every bit of feedback I've gotten is that the Hondas need the Honda fluid and do not ever run the same on any other fluid no matter what you do, at least for the ATFs. It's a specific blend made just for Honda by Mobil, and my suspicion is that the transmission is actually tightly engineered around the specific stuff. It's Honda fluid or problems, vs. having a fairly good experience with just Honda fluid. I've bought stuff that said "Even HONDA!" on it. It didn't work as advertised, and the fact that they have to advertise like that is really telling.
It's a nasty feeling, really. You're excluded from compatibility with things vs. nearly any other automaker. Can't hate on the torque as much as usual once I swapped the air intake out, though.

I used Toyota's Type 4 ATF on my family's vehicles all the time. It's all good. But there might be a thing with Honda, i'm not 100%. I know that i've used not brand fluids on many types of cars and have had no issues directly related to the fluid.
Biggest oddity is on some Volvo C30, S40, DBS and DB9. Lets say your rear brakes pads are gone. Ok, not biggy.... $X.xx at a local store or at dealership. Oh no (like Cobalt rear brakes) you have to use that special coin twist. No biggie, you get it and for some reason, it still won't twist. Welp, you have to come to us, we have to hook it to the scan tool, enter the rear ABS module, change it to service mode, charge you a trillion dollars for something easy you already started to do.
One of a million examples of course, but on rear brakes? Come on FoMoCo, porque esas mamadas?
As for the intake, none was more restricted than my clumsy A6. I promise you it was at least a 15HP gain no lie. Yes, cheapo Ebay intake :]
